Brighton Museum to open exhibition on 1960s mod fashion

A new exhibition on 1960s mod clothing is set to open at Brighton Museum on 10th May.

The In Crowd: Mod Fashion & Style 1958-66 will show outfits designed by Mary Quant, John Stephen and Brighton brand Ben Sherman.

The display is curated by Roger K Burton, who has styled films including Quadrophenia and Absolute Beginners.

Burton said: “The Mods rejected the 1950s, favouring sharp tailoring, bold colours, and a sense of modernity that captured the spirit of youth culture.

“More than just a fashion statement, they embraced a fresh outlook on life, celebrating youth, freedom, and modernity in ways that continue to inspire today.”

He said the exhibition includes early mod outfits from his collection and looks at designers behind the subculture’s style, with miniskirts, suits and button-down shirts.

Burton added: “These garments were statements of individuality, rebellion, and modernity.”

The exhibition also covers Brighton’s connection to the mod movement, including the 1964 clashes on the beach between mods and rockers, later shown in Quadrophenia.

Hedley Swain, chief executive of Brighton & Hove Museums, said: “This exhibition not only showcases the remarkable craftsmanship and innovation of mod fashion but also celebrates Brighton's unique historical connection to this influential youth movement.”
