BSU launches Somer Store to support local creatives
Somer Store, backed by Bath Spa University’s (BSU) Future Fashion Works, opened its doors at the weekend in Bath.
The Somer Store features products from students, staff and local brands, aiming to become a hub for creativity and sustainable fashion in the South West.
Poppi Carter, somer merchandiser and retail assistant and a third year fashion marketing and management student, said: “Being a part of Somer has been so exciting and special to be involved with, especially as a BSU student.
“I’m looking forward to collaborating with so many of the amazing creatives we have in Somerset and bring together members of our community surrounded by such exciting and ethical creations!”
The store builds on Bath Spa University’s support for graduates through projects like Emerge, a studio residency programme, and The Studio, a business space for students and micro-businesses focused on creativity and technology.
Somer Store will act as a testbed for Future Fashion Works’ plans to grow sustainable fashion business in the region.
George Morgan, second year BA creative arts practice student, said: “Working with Jess and Tamara in the run up to Somer's opening has been brilliant!
“Seeing students and emerging artists get the opportunity to sell work and engage with new audiences has been a highlight for me.
“I'm excited to see Somer bring something different to Bath.”
Somer Store projects will be included in degree courses such as interior design, arts management, fashion photography and creative arts practice, giving students live briefs with local and national businesses.
Second-year interior design students have already started work on a live project linked to the shop.
Andy Salmon, pro-vice-chancellor external at Bath Spa University, said: “We want to create the first destination in the Southwest that connects the makers, creatives and SMEs working in sustainable fashion and luxury retail and ensure our students are at the centre of that.”
Somer Store is located at No. 6 Bartlett Street, Bath.
Opening times are Wednesday 10:00–17:00, Thursday and Friday 10:00–18:00, Saturday 10:00–17:00, closed Sunday to Tuesday.
